Most of the loading and unloading of cargo onboard vessels is generally handled by stevedore companies under a contract. Experience shows that vessel and cargo often sustain damage during loading and unloading due to negligence on the part of the stevedores. It is therefore extremely important to monitor both loading and unloading closely, to enable immediate recording and inspection of any damage caused by the stevedore to vessel and cargo.
If damage has occurred, perform a joint survey, make entries in the logbook, and send a written complaint to the stevedore company. Get a written receipt for the complaint. Include photographs, which constitute valuable evidence.
